Seascapes of West Cornwall
These paintings are all about time. The waves change every instant, affected by the light, tide, weather and changing morphology of the seabed. The rocks and beaches, though they appear to be fixed and eternal, change according to the rhythm of geological time, which can act on the scale of thousands of years or can suddenly, shockingly speed up in the face of extraordinary storms.
The timescale of a human life exists within both these scales. Standing on the sea shore as the waves wash towards and away, again and again, the spectator is transfixed by the roaring proof of the unrepeatability of each moment – at the same time becoming equally aware of the continuity of the material substance of the human body with the rocks, the sand and the spray.
